Hi. Appreciate you taking the time to learn a little more about me. I got into coaching high school is an unusual way. My coaching career started like most I guess in the sense I starting coaching as a teenager assisting my brothers soccer team. I then moved on to be the head coach of a different team the next season. That first team was made up of some great kids/athletes but they had struggled to win games the previous seasons. Seems that no one wanted to coach them so when I took over the team I heard a lot things like – “that team will never win”, “you will quit before the first game”, “they will not behave for you”, etc. I asked simply how does a team qualify for the state finals. I was laughed at – you don’t have to worry about that I was told.
Well as the story goes – the proof was on the field. We only lost 1 game that season and a good portion of those kids went on to play varsity soccer for their high school. It was not great coaching (frankly I did not know enough to be a decent coach at the time) that turned it around – it was the fact that someone believed in their ability to play and pushed them to improve and forget about past mistakes.
That is the basis for this site. Over the past 30 years (since 1989) I have had the privilege to move on from the lower age groups to be the head coach of Varsity high teams. I became a varsity head coach at age 23 and I learned so much over the years – what to do and what NOT to do. On this site, my intention is not to share Xs and Os strategy of particular sport but to share universal insights on the human side of coaching – respecting your players and the game.
